Status of the Website

This website covers 14 years  the U.S. Air Force occupied RAF Station Kirknewton, Scotland.  Duncan Kirkley started the website in 1998 as a vehicle to bring former airmen together to share memories and generate enthusiasm for reunions.

I inherited the website in 2000 and it has been a labor of love for the past 24 years.  Over the years 850 found us and another 1,000 names were added from old orders.

The website has probably outlived its purpose.  Members are at an advancd age or deceased. The youngest members are into the high 70’s, and the oldest living members are in the high 80’s and 90’s.  Activity on the website has dropped to nil, and it is probably time to gradually phase it out.

There is an interactive website for members only on www.spokt.com.  If you served at Kirknewton and would like access send me an email with your service date requesting membership.  My email address is at the top.  Then watch for an email to join from spokt.com.

The domain name “rafkirknewton.com” will not be associated with this website after November 2025.   The domain will then be available for the current occupants of RAF Station Kirknewton.  I will continue as long as I am able to keep this going as www.hhpages.com/rafk

US Air Force Duty at RAF Station Kirknewton

The tour of duty was three years for single and married personnel accompanied by family. More than 2000 airmen served at RAF Station Kirknewton 1952 through 1966.  Around 1900 names can be viewed by clicking on Alumni list in the Directory on the left.

Not much exists today of the old RAF Station Kirknewton site. The upper site has been demolished and is high-end expensive homes. The buildings utilized by the USAF at the lower site by the airfield have been demolished except for two early era airplane hangars.  The runways still exist and are utilized by the RAF 661st Volunteer Glider Squadron (VGS).  The 661st resides in temporary administrative buildings and utilize one of the hangars to house the gliders.  The other hangar is utilized by local residents  for private airplanes.

A reunion of former USAF members that served at RAF Station Kirknewton was held in Edinburgh, Scotland  September 18-23, 2013.  The 661st VGS hosted the group for a luncheon and presentation on their glider activities.  Fred Crawford (1963-1965) then gave a presentation on the USAF years followed by a collection of old base photo’s.  These can be accessed by clicking on the entries in the directory on the left.
